It's Almost Christmas Again..... I know, I'm such a bad blogger. But, this I have to share with you, you know how we all want to loose weight and make these New Years resolution to exercise and start that diet.

Well after receiving a wonderful DVD a year ago, I re-visited it again last night. Did you know that through eating a raw diet you can basically protect yourself from getting known diseases. That a raw diet is packed with such healing nutrients, and the best part is you can eat as much as you want and won't put on an ounce of weight.

I ordered a Juicer, and will start my new lifestyle plan shortly. I used to use the excuse that because we live remotely (two hrs to the closest grocery store) that it was impossible to eat fresh vedgies and fruit.

I decided that it's difficult, but not impossible. The corner store carry's vedgies, and also, Fred Myers will pick your food for you and you can have it delivered via Road Runner to town.

I will keep everyone posted.....so, let's all take personal responsibility for our health and lives... happy Holidays everyone.

A True Alaskan!!!

Well, I bought myself a new camera so that I can take quality pictures this summer of the guests that are going to come through my shop and want to dress up in good time girl costume.

Now, being a newbie to SLR camera's, I did a lot of research into which ones are idot proof and still will pull off the best pictures. So, I decided on Sony's Alpha 330L. So, far so good, however I needed a practice pig to practice different techniques on. I wanted her to be Alaskan, so, I enlisted who I thought would be a the best subject, one who would be happy with, shall we say treats, no, no not tricks. One that would patiently wait for me to try out different settings, and , lighting situations. A true Alaskan, who has more than 50% of her blood line going back into the early times of Alaskan history. None other than Gertie-Lee, my Alaskan Sled Dog Dobberman mix. So, here are some of the first results.

Vancouver 2010 Olympics Countdown......

Well, it was an exciting time in Vancouver, BC. I just returned and the city was exploding with the count down to the winter Olympics. Athletees pictures painted on the side of buildings in downtown Vancouver.

My trip consisted of eating a whole lot of Sushi, breakfast at Sophie's Cosmic Cafe, and walking downstairs from my daughters and having great tasting rich coffee and homemade cinnamon buns. I couldn't tell who was more baked the buns or the staff.

I got to see lots of old friends, go to pottery sales and saw Michael Moore's movie, "Capitalism, A Love Story" which I highly recomend.

A high lite of my trip was spending time with my daughter, son-in law, and his son. They took me to a Canucks Hockey Game, which was awesome, loved it. The Sedin Twins, Henrick and Daniel just doing their magic on ice and scoring goals. And thanks for the tickets Alex Edler, Canucks Team Player and to Barry for asking. I so appreciated it, and had a blast.

The down and up side was the weather, it rained almost every day, which, when, it's raining in Vancouver, it's snowing in Whistler................yeh that means Of course, it's going to be great for the Winter Olympics...and good luck to all the participants. Wish, I'd be there for the Canada vs USA Hockey game, but, $4500. a ticket is just a little bit out of my price range.

Whenever you leave Alaska, you so look forward to "going outside" as it's referred to, but, there is a love hate relationship, as, you begin to miss and look forward to coming back homw. My husband and dog Gertie were happy to see me. Of course I missed all of my Alaskan friends and family. I love being back home in Healy..... and made it for Christmas and will be going out for New years at Clear Sky Lodge, the best steaks anywhere..................

Iditarod Update......

It's been 3 months since I came from fromt he Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Nome. I participated in a 6 day craft show. I've got to tell you, it was such an amzing experience and recommend it to anyone.

At the craft show, there were Eskimo carvers, carving ivory, and making the "Ruff" the fur trim that goes around the hood of a parka.

I ate Muskot sausage for breakfast, which was delish....

Now, of course when the siren rang, it meant another musher was about to cross the finish line. It was very exciting. Lance Mackey won again, third year in a row, and have my T-shirts, .....dirty dog and his wife has the ......alaskan Hussie one, for more info on these t-shirts check the web site.

The banqueet dinner at the end of the Iditarod was exciting, to hear Mushers' story's about their trials and tribulations as they made their way to Nome on this 1000 mile race. Some scratched, some were held back by blizzards, and many came in with frost bitten faces.

Thanks to Matt at Airport Pizza for letting me go around and sell my T-shirts during the beer tasting event. Which many were sold, from the woman who looked at a t-shirt and couldn't stop laughing to the point where she fell over still sitting in her chair and still laughing her head off.

From the great friends that I met, like Karen from Washington, who came to Nome to learn how to be a street walker, this was because the side walks on the side street was so narrow...........what were you thinking?

Go to Nome.............you just have to.

We're No Angels opens up first shop in Alaska

We just opened up our frst shop and beauty salon in Healy, Alaska.

Two weeks ago with the opening of our first shop, we were off to a good start. Because of our desired location, close to Denali National Park, we are attracting a lot RV er's and of course locals.

Due to the cost to insulate our shop in he winter, it will be a seasonal shop catering to the locals and tourist alike.

So, if you are driving through from Anchorage to Fairbanks, stop by, we are locted at the Chevron Staton in Healy............

2009 Iditarod Sled Dog Race Under Way...

The great race is now under way as of yesterday March 07, 2009. We wish our friends David Sawatzky of Healy, Alaska and Jeff King of Denali Park, Alaska, the very best of luck this year with the race.

What an exciting time, they will have to endure high winds, lots of snow, and varying degrees in ice cold temperatures to being sleep deprived. It really is a race that requires so much of a person in endurance, yet, it is still so under-rated in terms of what other sports generate in the ransom that can be won. Now, my hope is that it will come into it's own in time and earn the respect that it well deserves.

I'm not sure if Discovery Channel will be here this year and have another season featuring the Last Great Race, the Iditarod. I only hope that they will continue on with another season, as, it is so amazing and exciting to see.

I'm leaving for Nome, Alaska, where the finish line is in one week, I can hardly wait. I'll bring back a full report. All the best to everyone this year in the 2009 Iditarod.....go Dave and Jeff

Missing Stuffed Dog Returns to Nome, Alaska

I was doing a haircut today on a friend who knows Nome quite well. It does sound like it's going to be a lot of fun at the Iditarod Sled Dog Race later this month.

This friend was telling me about a famous dog, who's name escapes me right now. Anyways, someone made a stuffed dog (ie: like a stuffed animal) in the name of this famous dog. Mysteriously the dog went missing. Now, we're talking years and years according to my source.

Well, guess what, the stuffed dog, turned up some place on the East coast of the United States. Apparently, how the story goes, a collector purchased the dog, and somehow he was found and has been returned to Nome.

While I'm in Nome, I will do some investigating on the missing pooch and report back.

When I get down to the Alleutians and Dutch Harbor, I will also investigate the rumor about a bar owner who was a hairdresser with a hook at the end of his arm. He would get you drunk and cut your hair at the same time. I guess you'd have to be tipsy to let a Captain Hook type character do your hair.

Now, I may not get south to investigate the Happy Hooker Story for some time, so, if any Alaskans can shed some light on this story and respond, I'll post your response.

Up Coming Events

This will be an exciting month and a half. I've always wanted to go to Nome to see the finish of the Iditarod Sled Dog race, and this year will be the year. We're No Angels will be selling our wares at the craft show in Old St. Joes Church.
Old St. Joe's is a historical building and is one block from the finish line. Everyone I've spoken to who have gone to Nome say it's just a hoot, lots and lots of fun.

We've been busy having new T-Shirts designed for the Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race for the end of Feb. with the finish this year in Fairbanks, AK. And, also for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Nome, Alaska.

Great news, T-Shirts will be available to anyone who wants one. You don't have to have been to the Iditarod or the Yukon Quest to get another original We're No Angels Design.

"I Shower with Dick's Hairy Goat" T- shirt was such a hit, that now they will be available in Black, Navy and Brown. We've done away with the Stonewash Blue and Green. All 100% Cotton Gildan brand heavy weight.

Just check for the two new T-shirts online in about 2 weeks......they are a giggle.

SOAP PRICES DROP BY $1.00 RETAIL!!!

Well, I've been asked by many how the Seattle Gift Show was. Well, I'd say that we held our own and represented Alaska in the fine light that it is.

It was very exciting to meet buyers and exhibitors. Apparently the show was smaller than in past years. I suppose that is to be expected. Now, on an individual bases, speaking with retailers from the Seattle area, I'm told that sales are steady and that they are doing better than what the media is portraying.

In lieu of the weakened economy in the lower 48, I decided to drop the soap prices by $1.00 ea bar in an effort to do our part. With that, we are taking a cut and are not including in the bars the extra cost of shipping that Alaska has to deal with. (extra barge and another truck shipment) Prices will be re-evaluated in January 2010 and may need to go back to what they were one week ago. My intention is to give you the best value for your $1.00, and if there is any way that we can continue to keep them where they are, then that's what we will do.

Candles are priced at lower 48 prices already, so, they will stay where they are.

Getting close to Valentines, so, don't forget about your sweetie....now, good nite all.

Happy New Year- it's 40 Below !!!

This has been a cold week and looks like it will continue on into the next week also.

We are keeping warm here in the Interior of Alaska with our Potbelly Coal/Wood Burning Stove. Keeping a home warm here in Alaska can be very costly if you are using Oil. This year we have our new stove and it heats the whole house up nicely.

Who would have thought a few years ago, I'd be living in Alaska, close to Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley and stoking a fire.
Yes, it's true, using a sledge hammer and pounding large pieces of frozen coal in order to get a few pieces that would fit in the door of our stove.

Even Gertie, the dog has to put on booties so that her paws wouldn't freeze when she's outside.

Hopefully we'll be able to see the Northern Lights tonight, making it a special New Year and a great way to start 2009. There are many Japanese Tourist that have come into Fairbanks this past Saturday for that purpose alone.

Winter Solstice-Dec. 21st

Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. Sunrise is at 10:45am in the interior of Alaska and the Sunset is at 2:50pm. 4hrs 5min. of daylight. Two hours north in Fairbanks they loose a little bit more of their day then we do here. It's about another half hour difference....

There are no shortages of festivals and parties this evening.......and here in Alaska where we have a shortage of daylight hours, we are now looking forward to the days getting longer....
I have been invited to go dog mushing, and will post that experience if and when that happens. I may even post some pics....

Bathhouse Twins, Belle and Tallulah

I'm always asked which ones are the most popular scents. This one is overlooked a lot, but, if you give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

As I promised, without further delay, here is another story which is on the back of every soap and candle.

Here's their Story:
The Bathhouse Twins arrived in Dawson City, Yukon in the Spring of 1898. Both stylishly attired, one sweet, the other brassen and dangerous. Together they operated the Back Parlor Bathhouse a block away from the "Cribs" on Paradise Alley, where the real working girls operated.

The Twins were known as the "Wild Flowers", not only for the great flowers they grew but for their special talents in the bedroom. After making their fortune off the miners they moved and settled as law abiding citizens in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Trade Shows ,Craft Shows and New Products

It's been a very exciting Christmas Season. I've been going from Fairbanks to Palmer, AK to attend a number of craft shows this season. We had a great season, and thank you so much to everyone.

I test marketed a new product last weekend. Massage/Lotion Bars. These all sold out within one hour. So, needless to say, we will start to carry them in our regular lineup in the new year, from Feb.'09 onward.

Massage and Lotion Bar description: These are all made with Shea Butter, Bee's Wax, Sweet Almond Oil and fragrance. We tested 4 scents: 1-Dick's Hairy Goat, 2- Rosehip, Jasmine and Pommegranate, #3- Vanilla, Lavender and Patchulli #4- Spearmint and Eucaluptus

They are a hard bar that soften and melt on contact with your skin. Wonderful to massage with or use as a hard lotion Bar. Just rub it on your skin and it will moisturize the driest of skin. Very very nice, you'll love it.

There are way to many companies making products that consumers just don't want. Take a look at the American auto industry, large gas eating machines. Consumers have been asking for more fuel effient cars and trucks for a long time, and have had to look at purchasing cars from foreign manufacturers as an alternative for some. We want energy effienct vehicles.

What does this have to do with a candle and soap company? It's the same in every industry, our's included. From fragrance to makeup, just look at the demonstrators in the large department stores practically spraying cologne and Eau de Toilet in your face as you step off the escalator.

I ought to know, it was one of my first jobs, years ago, and what a great intro to quality fragrances.

I worked in the Perfume Industry, representing both French, Italian and American Fragrances.

What's Up This Christmas?

It's always an exciting time of year and this year is no different. Craft show's are happening all over the state. Our first one was last weekend in Fairbanks, and what a success it was. If there is a recession, you'd never know it in Alaska.

We will be this weekend coming at the Carlson Cntr. in Fairbanks, the Palmer Show on the 29th of Nov. Healy Bazaar on Dec. 6th and the Farmers Mrkt in Fairbanks on the 13th.
Whats New: Large Glass 16 and 24oz Candle Jars. They look and smell fabulous, and of course like the rest of the line have stories on the back with the character on the front. First launched last weekend, they are proving to be a big hit and will eventually become a part of our regular lineup.....

Govenor Sarah Palin

I generally do not like to speak about politics as it does enduce many emotions for many. I believe that Govenor Palin has been a wonderful breath of fresh air here in Alaska. The Alaskan's I've spoken to love her. She has strong convictions and will not be bullied. She has helped us out on an indivdual basis with some form of relief due to the high cost of fuel here in Alaska. Consider that here in the interior Alaska and north of us, it can get to 40 below and colder on occassion, and has reached -70. When you are heating your home with oil, the costs are outrageous, so far it has gone up as far as $5.89 gallon this summer, but since has dropped some.

We are adding a wood/coal potbelly stove to our home to help offset the high cost of fuel.

Back to Govenor Palin as Vice President. You may or may not agree with all of her stands and positions, but, I do feel that she will choose the right course of action when push comes to shove.

I would love to hear a little more talk on both sides on how government will help in implementing a plan for medical and dental for all. It's time to start following the model of other countries that have been successful in providing this for its people.
Before I left Canada, I was paying $42./month, that included all my doctor visits, surgerys, specialists, hospital stays. To debunk the talk that I've heard that you have to wait months to see a doctor. That has never been my experience on the West Coast.
I could visit a walk-in clinic and see my regular doctor or whoever happened to be working that day, or schedule an appt. with a doctor without much of a delay.

Thank you Govenor Palin and I wish you the best in Washington should your party be elected. Alaskans are torn because we would love to see Palin in Washington, but, will feel the loss here in Alaska.

Shop Shut Down-Cruising

There will be no orders shipped from Sept. 12/08-Oct. 10/08 we are shutting things down after a wonderful summer season and are going to be cruising Alaska South East to Vancouver. Then off to Seattle and back home.

Business will resume Oct. 10/2008

A little more History, Re: Captain James Cook this time...

There is not much mention of Captain James Cook making it out alive after his trip of 1778 through the icy and danagerous waters of the Artic Ocean.

Why talk about this, well, being a company that speaks of historical and colorful characters of the goldrush, it is approriate to draw some attention to other note worthy events that have touched Alaska. However, Captain Cook certainly is not as colorful of a Character as those from the goldrush, but, I'm sure that he had many oolorful accounts to report. Alaska in many cases seems to be elusive to many from the lower 48 states and Canada.

Anchorage attorney and former Assemblyman James Barnett has recently written a book "Captain Cook in Alaska and the North Pacific". Mr. Barnett's research was extensive on the subject.

230 years ago tomorrow will be the aniversary of Captain James Cook in Alaska as stated in the Anchorage Daily News.

ETHEL THE TART 1898
Ethel Mae Scarlet, a young prostitute from Colorado took on the identity of a preachers daughter while travelling on a steamer from Seattle, WA to Ketchikan, Alaska. Ethel was run out of town soon after she joined the local ladies church social upon the arrival of the preachers real daughter. She opened a successful brothel in Skagway called "The Ministers Daughters" with the gold nuggets she earned back in Ketchikan.

Summer Solstice-June 21st

24hours of daylight. There are not to many places with 24hrs of daylight. Well, here in the interior of Alaska, 10 miles North of Denali National Park and 2 hrs south of Fairbanks is a day that we wait for all year. There are many parties in Fairbanks and festivals taking place, and I'm sure around the state.

It's an odd feeling when you are out at a BBQ at what feels like 8pm with the sun shining strong, and you look at your watch and it's 1:30 am. Tonight was no exception, we had a bon fire and a wonderful breaking of bread with friends that own a local B&B, Alaska Chateau B&B. It's always interesting to find out how people ended up here in Alaska and how they met their significant other.

And for those wanting to meet Alaskan men, always keep in mind that the odd's are good, but, the goods are odd.

Well this old gal has to call it a night. I'ts been a very busy couple of days with orders for We're No Angels, plus my job at Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge.
On that note, will try and get some sleep under the Midnight Sun.

Trace Adkins in Fairbanks, Alaska

Trace Adkins is performing this evening in Fairbanks. If you saw the Celebrity Apprentice with Trace on it, you couldn't help but like him. His family showed up to surprise him, and they all looked so happy.

Trace if you are reading this, I hope you like your "I shower with Dick's Hairy Goat" T-shirt and soap that I sent on to you. I'm really disappointed that I was unable to make it up to Fairbanks this evening.

Tanana Farmers Market-Fairbanks

Drove up to Fairbanks early, very very early, don't know how the farmers do it.
Made it to Fairbanks, and set up, and one hour later, I was ready to start selling at my first farmers market. What a great day, 64 degrees, which was nice considering a week and half ago we had a couple of snow storms.......

So, many wonderful handmade gifts and crafts, the farmers themselves weren't quite ready to make a show yet, a couple or so more weeks for them. Handmade mustards from Moosetards, and wonderful stained glass jewlery from Jack River Jewlery made by Nurse Sue and massage therapist (glad to have both of her other skills on hand, just in case). Wow, there are so many talented people in Alaska. Little Gretchen's first show selling like crazy her homemade carmel and sweets....... the quality of the food vendors was also great.

So, by the end of the day, after driving two hours each way, stuffing myself on homemade raviolli and fallafel sandwich's, it was a great success.

Tourist should be arriving off the ships and into Denali National Park by this Tuesday. How exciting.............Till next time

Gertie on the Mend

We have had tons of enquiry's about Gertie, out dog. Gertie went missing for two weeks. We searched everywhere for her, and finally out on our ATV, we found her. Now, this is quite something, considering we're in Alaska, plus it went down to -20 a couple of the nights that she was out. She was in a Leg Hold Trap, and starved. It's amazing a wolf or a lynx didn't get her. Anyways, she only lost two toes, and now is fat, healthy and very peppy again.

Thanks to everyone who enquired about her and helped in the search. It was really something peering up on the side of a hill after hearing something and a chain making noise as we drove by an old grave site. Three people who were unknown and buried in 1920 at this site.

The Scoop

On our Anita Bath, Mustard Bath Salts 10 oz bottle we will discontinue using a scoop attached to the outside of the bottle. It seems to be redondent due to the fact that you pour the salts out of the bottle. Instead, included will be a story attached to the neck of the bottle of Anita Bath, as there are on the soaps and candles. The scoop will remain in a two pound coffee bag of Mustard Bath Salts....
